What's a potcake and why is everyone obsessed?
If you’ve ever met a potcake or a potcat, you already know—they’re not just dogs, they’re something special. Potcakes are island dogs from places like the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos, Antigua, Jamaica, and beyond. They got their name from the leftover “pot cake” (scrapings from cooking pots) that locals would feed them. And the coolest part? They come in every shape, size, and color imaginable. No two potcakes are ever the same, each one completely unique. "Potcat", of course, has been the loving nickname given to the kitties from the same areas, meeting the same description.
People love potcakes for so many reasons: they’re incredibly loyal (once they choose you, that’s it—you’re their person), smart and intuitive, resilient despite everything they’ve been through, and the perfect mix of goofy, playful, and sweet. They have this quiet magic about them... A blend of independence and affection that just hits different. It’s honestly crazy to think we’ve brought over 1,000 potcakes into Nova Scotia in the last five years… and every single one has left their mark.
