Who We Are
South Paw Conservation is a 100% volunteer-run animal rescue based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We may be a small team, but we do big things. Primarily rescuing dogs and cats, while always staying open to helping any other animals in need.
We work with trusted partners both locally and internationally, including in the Bahamas, Antigua, and the Cayman Islands. We try to support areas where the need is simply too great to ignore.

What We Do
Our work goes so far beyond rescue. We’ve participated in large-scale spay and neuter initiatives in order to help reduce pet overpopulation and improve conditions at the source, hoping to help prevent suffering before it begins.
Locally, we support our community through low-income spay and neuter programs, as well as taking in animals when families need help. We also provide medical care to animals who may not otherwise receive it, from basic care to complex procedures. We work closely with veterinarians and specialists to give these pets a real chance at a healthy, pain-free life.
How Rescue Happens
When coordinating rescues, we rely on a combination of partnerships, commercial airlines like WestJet, and, above all, the kindness of volunteer travellers to help transport animals to safety. This mix of support plays a huge role in how many lives we’re able to save and improve.
To date, we’ve rescued over 3,000 animals, with more than 2,000 coming from the Bahamas (have you heard of "potcakes" and "potcats"?). What began with feral cats — trapping, socializing, and helping them learn to trust — quickly grew into a much larger mission, and we're not stopping anytime soon.

Foster-Based Care
At South Paw, we don’t operate out of a facility. Every animal is placed in a foster home, where they can decompress, feel safe, and begin adjusting to life as part of a family.
We take this responsibility seriously — not only to the animals, but to the people who first saved them and trusted us to carry that effort forward. We are committed to placing animals in homes where they will be loved, protected, and treated as family.
Our Impact & Community
Today, rescued South Paw animals can be found in loving homes across Canada, all the way from Newfoundland to British Columbia.
Everything we do here is made possible by our incredible South Paw family — our adopters, fosters, volunteers, and supporters who continue to show up and help us save lives.
